The Six Major Colors of Cigar Wrappers

Ever wonder what the story is behind the different types of wrapper leaves that cigar rollers use when they are rolling your next great smoke? Well, here's the facts!

Nowadays there are six color variants in use. There used to be as many as ten, but now we're dealing with just six. Wrapper leaves are grown in the countries of Cuba, Sumatra, The United States, Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Cameroon.

The six shades are:
Claro claro - A sweet, lightly green wrapper leaf.
Claro - This is a light tan wrapper leaf, usually grown in the shade. It possesses a neutral flavoring.
Natural - Light to medium brown, it too is grown in the shade.
Colorado - This wrapper leaf is brown to reddish brown, with a rich taste and pleasing aroma.
Maduro - Spanish for "ripe", the Maduro wrapper leaf is cured longer to produce a rich, dark brown appearance.
Oscuro - Also known as "negro" to denote its dark coloring, it takes the most time to be ready for the rollers.

More great facts to fascinate your friends as you enjoy your cigars!

Almost any Cameroon and a nice, dark, chewy maduro...specifically Brazilian Aripiraca.
usually Natural Colorado or Maduro, i've not had enough Oscuro to offer a huge opinion, what ive had i liked though...
It's interesting to me that the taste in shade of wrappers has changed. Years ago when Macanudo was among the most popular brands, the very light natural or claro wrappers were very popular. Now cameroon and corojo and other reddish brown colorado wrappers seem to have captured the imagination and seduced our tastebuds, and people looking for more flavor and spice are into the darkest of dark wrappers you can get.

For me, I like cigars with wrappers from all parts of the shade spectrum: Cuvee Blanc with natural wrapper, CAO MX2 with maduro, J. Fuego corojo somewhere in between.
agreed, i still like the Macanudo cafe series, but on hot days and stuff like that when i like something lighter...
I have been very partial to Nicaraguan Corojo lately and I love a topshelf Cameroon.
BTW, a friend of mine started a cigar blog recently and he has been running a feature on all the wrapper types. Its a good read. If your interested here is the link...

I'm typically a maduro guy, but I like variety, so I frequently mix in Sumatras (RP Edge), Corojos (almost anything by Don Pepin) and Candelas (Fuente).
Maduro and corojo.
Maduros are some of my favorites when it comes to just curing and color.

Regarding flavor a good maduro is still top but it varies based on the original properties of the leaf and the process they used to create the maduro, followed by nice fully matured sun grown leaves and last but not least I really like corojo
Love the taste and look of the Cameroon but the look of the Maduro is unbeatable.
