Social Cigar

Cigar Social Network

I was brought up on cigars and made most of my cigar smoking friends at a cigar shop near my house. After being a customer there for quiet some time, I decided to get a job there. To make a long story short, the bossman made it clear to me that I should treat customers according to how much money they spend, I disagreed and was fired two days later. I've also come to find that a cigar store 20 miles away, sells cigars for much less. Just an example, I bought a box of CAO America Potamics for about $90, where the old place was selling them for $150. Graycliffs are also $10 more a stick at the old place!! Today, I went into the shop and got blasted by the shop owner for not spending enough money there. I forgot to mention that all the friends that I made at the shop have been outcast by my former boss. I apologize, he just really pissed me off today. Do I have a right to be upset?

Josef,

First, welcome to Social Cigar.

Second, the high price part sounds like the place that I used to work. The owner priced most of his cigars at or near MSRP. He also did not give discounts on box prices. Comparatively speaking, his prices were much higher than any tobacconist around. I quit the shop because of the principal of the idea that if he wasn't selling his cigars at competitive prices, he wasn't supporting me or any other person that doesn't have disposible income.

There is a thing that apparently some store owners just aren't familiar with, and that is customer service. Some shop owners don't deserve to have a store because they just don't get it. You treat customers cordially and friendly because you want them to continue to make purchases there and recommend the shop to their friends. If the employees treat the customers according to the amount they buy, those coustomers will never buy more than that amount IF they continue to buy anything at all.

The shop owner that chastised you for not spending more money is a horse's ass. You decide where to spend your money. Some schmuck who owns a shop does not dictate to you where you spend your money.

You have every right to be pissed off.
Welcome Josef. Another CincyTucky area ceegar smoker joins the circus, glad to have ya. Living here as we do, one doesn't have to be a "Swami Boy Martin" to figure out which shop you're talking about, Josef. I've met 'refugee' former customers of his hanging out in a shop almost FORTY miles away in Boone Co. Kentucky,.(hint hint!)

Heck, get to know the cigar reps from a few companies (maybe you already do) and ask THEM what they think about such business practices. (Yeah, these reps probably shouldn't be "talking smack'" about any of the stores they serve, but if it looks, smells, sounds and acts like a horse's ass, it probably is...)
Josef I think I know the shop that you got fired from, and believe me, It's rep, and the owners rep keep many good customers away. Best thing that could of happened to you is getting fired. Welcome to the SC buddy, and remember. The best cigar prices will always be on the KY side of the river!
That's totally insane! I would not go back there at all if I were you. Your old boss will eventually be out of business if he treats his customers the way you describe. Our staff treats all our customers no matter who they are, with respect, and they're friendly and personable to anyone that comes in our lounge. Thsi guy definitely needs some customer service training.
Why is it that pretty much everyone in this area knows exactly where you are talking about without having to ask? Without getting into all of the details here, I was hanging out at that shop alot on the weekends. I had a bad experience, and decided not to spend my hard earned cash there anymore. Why do it, especially when the prices are high (some consider it gouging) and good quality smokes and people can be found other places? Some of the loyal folks in there one time told me they were getting leaned on to spend more...not the feeling I want from a vendor of any sort, retail or otherwise. The only thing he has going for him is, with the smoking ban, where else are you going to smoke in that part of town?

I will say I agree with Tom about B&M's. If you go in there, buy a few sticks, maybe a drink or two, and then after that I think it is your prerogative whether you want to smoke a cigar you just bought from them, or one you brought with you. The B&M should have no problem with that. Maybe you like a little age or certain humidity level for your cigars. The B&M also doesn't know whether you brought in a cigar with you that you purchased from them previously. That is my opinion.
hookers treat me the same way. The more I pay - the more I get from them................................

..

..

ummmm - different story.

You've got a right to be upset. Stand for your principles and the fact that he treats his customers differently speaks volumes.
Thats not really fair.... Everyone should be treated as a customer and not a dollar amount. If that were the case how do the small spenders become big spenders if they are not treated equally?
As mentioned in another thread, some shop owner around here sounds like he needs that big stick taken out of his ass. Or perhaps hammered in further, until gray matter and/or skull are breached. :D
