So I got a Humidor over the weekend off of my neighbor who has given up smoking all together. Well he hasn't used it forever and let the humidity laps and used it to hold the door open at his house. I guess looking at it like that I rescued it lol. I the question I have is.... I bought one of those crystal bags that you soak in water (distilled does that matter?) which I haven't done yet. I was told to soak those crystals and then let them sit in the humidor for 5-6 days b4 putting cigars in and then after putting cigars in let it sit another 2-3 days with the cigars in so they become acclimated to the humidity which should be 70%. Is this correct? If not what should I do so I have a great set up to put some sticks in and be able to enjoy them.

Attached are some pics of the humidor and the crystal packet, also some suggestions as to what to fill this humidor with would be great.

PS: Big thanks to Leaning house cigar for taking time with me on Friday night ... http://leaninghousecigars.com/ anyone in the PGH area should visit this shop great people and a great selections

Do you have a hydrometer? A good hydrometer is necessary to this whole process.
Not as of yet the cigar shop where I've been going has them on order.. they said by the end of the week shey should have them in and I plan on buying one then
Nice humidor for free !
The way I set up my humi was to get distilled water ( yes must be distilled water ) . Get a new antibacterial sponge , wipe down the inside of your humi with the distilled water , not too much , just enough to wet it down . Then take a small bowl , add the sponge and your distilled water . let set for a couple of days .
Quick tip : go to Wal Mart , you can find a Digital Hygrometer there , fairly reasonable . You can find them with the weather stations . No problems with mine , works great .
That's how I would do it. Good suggestions wedge!
Nice box, when you done curing it, you should be able to drop the lid and hear it whoosh instead of slam shut.
I broke in a new humi about 9 months ago and it took about 10 days for me to stabilize the humidity around 70. So, Rob don't get frustrated, you will find the right balance by experimenting with different size humidifiers until you find a good balance. I just threw away a humidifier that started growing mold. For now, I have replaced it with a new sponge that I dampen when I need to bring it up a few notches. Seems to work just fine.
I used the Boveda Humidipak seasoning packets - worked great - just put them in the humidor and let sit for 7-10 days. After seasoning, I now use the 72% Humidipaks now instead of water, etc and it stays perfect at about 69%RH.

boveda is the best!
That's what I use.
I also reconstitute them when they start to dry out.
Wayne - someone else told me that too......how do you do it?
Yeah, how do you do that? I get about 4 months out of mine. Wayne how was your Christmas?
I'll post some pictures and process info on the reconstitute thing.

Great Christmas with the family out at the farm. We also had a great herf (pictures on my page). :)
Thanks guys for the help... someone also told me to take a fine finishing sand paper and give it a light sanding is this smart or even something to ever consider?
