My name is SGT Harmon, Brandon, I'm in Afghanistan right now and I'm fairly new to cigars..I got into it about a year ago and know I love it, but I've been deployed for about 5 months and this hobby really picked up. Until now I didn't really care about what I smoked, Just smoking a cigar was good enough, but now I want to get a few here and there and really figure out what my tastes are, can you guys kinda give me a hand on what brands and types of cigars can give me a good spectrum of what there is out there... then I'm going to go on a scavenger hunt and try to get them.... Thank you.

Welllllll....depending on flavor/strength profile, there's lots of tasties I can recommend :

Mild - Cuvee Blanc, Romeo y Julieta 1875, Camacho Havana, Oliva Serie O, Flor de Oliva

Medium - A. Fuente Hemingway, Hoyo de Tradicion, Excalibur Legend, Punch Chateau M

Full - La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero, Camacho Corojo, Rocky Patel The Edge, Cain, Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970

Just a snapshot
thanks for the list I'll defiantely keep my eye out for that... all I know is I smoked a cuban romeo y julieta, but it wasn't a 1875, it was pretty good, but the way they stored their cigars were definately sub par...
From that list I definately know I got a far way to go... when I become a cigar aficionado does my mustache end up growing in more amazing than ever before?.... I dunno, random question but that's just how I picture it going down
I alway's suggest to a newbie that they start off with samplers .
You can purchase a sampler with different brands , different strengths , different regions . This way you don't get stuck with a cigar you do not enjoy .
Here is just a sample of some samplers out there . every online retailer has thier own samplers .

that is an awesome site, I ran up a bill on there after I got your post last night, but passed out before I hit send... the internet sucks and I spent all day filling sand bags so I was exsaughted, hopefully I can remember what I put in my basket cause it all disappeared by the time I woke up... I guess it timed out
As always I agree with Kev, samplers are they way to go when looking for "that perfect smoke". As always I prefer Famous to Cigars International. They are both good, but focus on different labels. I also look for sales and closeouts for that "killer deal". A word of warning about closeout's, don't fall in love with a cigar that you won't be able to get any more, she'll break your heart for sure!

that's great advice... I'm still on the hunt for tostitos baked chips I think is what they were, I found them one week and never saw them again but they were amazing... so I know that this is a cigar post but if anyone knows where that went.... give me a shout out lol
I'd also add to the above that terms like "full flavor" or strong/mild are often subjective. I also am a strong proponent of samplers to see what you like and I still buy samplers after many years of cigars. What you like (or end up liking) might not be what I like. CI and Famous and others all have samplers. Can you get samplers over there? Or will someone need to send to you? Packaging would be a concern if the latter. How a cigar is stored/shipped/humidified or not all have a lot to do with your ultimate enjoyment. For now I wouldn't worry about brands until you try a bunch, take careful notes, etc. Be sure to smoke it when not rushed. Trying to judge a flavor like or dislike while under fire or on recon could be problematic. You're supposed to be concentrating on other things, right? :)
Sending them is no prob... it takes like about 9 days to get over here... haha I don't have to wory about recons... I'm a Army firefighter, atleast if I run into a fire while trying to try out a new one I'll definately have a place to light it up... I'm sure aviation fuel leaves a horrible flavor though... thanks
oh and I am learning the offical terms, I'm reading cigars 101 off a couple websites lol
I would go to your local shop and ask them what 10 cigars they would recommend to give you a taste of what's out there. I just picked up the "sport" about 6 months ago and have found that's the best way to get started. My problem now is that buying/smoking new sticks is pretty addictive. In the beginning I felt intimidated asking for suggestions, but the shop owners that are good will enjoy turning you on to new lines, etc.

Have fun and ask lots of questions!
I plan on it whenever I get home... right now it's kinda soldiers handing out their favs and showing it off... hopefully I can find some that I like and can vouch for to start showing off
OH! I almost forgot, bunbles can be a good value. My favorite "every day" smoke is the LaFlordita that runs right around 41 a stick. Oliva also make tasty bundles, Flor de Oliva, that are a great value. Also, add you address to the "official" mailing list and you may get some surprises from members...
