Social Cigar

Cigar Social Network

I started this discussion due to a similar one that recently closed for additional comments.

I've only been a member of Social Cigar since May 2009 and I'm glad to hear members talk about the past. The founders and longtime members of Social Cigar have made me feel a like I'm a part of the site. Thank you for that.

I'm a longtime cigar smoker and still have much more to learn about cigars. I started smoking cigars in 1989 when I gave up smoking 3 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day. With my coming from a background of cigarette smoking (I have nothing against cigarettes) I felt that cigars were just another way of enjoying tobacco without inhaling. I compared it to cigarette smoking where you go in buy a pack or two of XYZ brand and that's it. Fortunately I learned different. I purchased my first cigar at a well known Chicago B&M. I started my cigar education the same day and have done research ever since.

Since I first became a member of what I feel is the best cigar forum I've ever visited, I've made friends both real and virtual. I look forward to meeting many more of you in person.

In the "a trip down memory road" forum, other forums, chat's, post's, and meeting people I've learned so much about the day's prior to my joining Social Cigar. This knowledge has helped me meet and understand what you founders and longtime members are talking about when I've met you in person or will meet you, I can feel part of the crowd.

Sure other forms talk more about cigars, pipes, and such. However I never had the opportunity to meet anyone from another cigar forum. Social Cigar is just what it means.

Welcome to "Hiking down memory lane". I hope I hear from many FOG's ...So post away your memories, or hijack the thread so all of us can be part of the past, present and future.

Cool, Loomis!

3-1/2 packs a day? Not only an expensive habit, but where did you find the time to smoke all those cigarettes and still have time to do anything else? That's 70 per day, and if you figure you're awake for 16 hours, that's 4.375 an hour. If each cigarette takes 5 minutes to smoke, that means every waking hour of the day, you're spending 1/3 of that time smoking. Unbelievable. That's not including time spent getting to where you're going to smoke, etc. wow.

So now here you are smoking cigars instead, going to herfs with MMK and Duane Holmes and Joe_Ed., etc. Well, I was made to feel at-home from the beginning, and I've tried to keep that feeling of openness and friendliness going. I joined January of 2008, about 5 months after it started I guess.

And fun of course. I like to think we have some fun here, even if MMK tends to get in the way of that with all his moodswings and diatribes. The guy needs help.
Technical difficulties are my excuse - what's yours, cry-baby?
That was in the days when you could smoke anywhere you wanted.
I know what you mean. I remember going on interviews when I graduated from college, and in the waiting room of the temp agencies, everyone was smoking. The receptionist had a headset on so she could chainsmoke while she answered the phone, the agents when you went behind the scenes would offer you a smoke and then light up while they were talking to you. Man, what a contact high. No drug addiction there.
Karl, I was working in retail at the time when smoking wasn't offensive to hardly anyone. I had ashtrays all over the counters and burn marks from cigarettes on the wood counter frames. I went through 3 1/2 packs a day but most likely wasted a half of pack by letting it burn down in an ashtray or on the counter while taking care of customers. Thinking back on it's a good thing the counter's never caught on fire. You have to remember twenty years ago the smoke police and nanny's of today were not even born yet and those who had been were still having mom change their diapers.
That's funny. When I worked thirds at the grocery store, (stocking cans and so forth,) before people went nuts about smoking, I used to smoke while I was stocking shelves. The store was dead between 2:30 and 5:00, so I didn't really have to worry about customers.
Karl = pretty good at math! But apparently I've been relegated to his "etcetera list". (See his post about the Hoosier Herf about seven above this one. ) ;)
Karl?
