Hey gang, my brother was just out for a few days in AZ with me and he said that he got a humidor from a friend that has some mold in it.  Is there a way to get rid of the mold and still use the humidor or should he just toss it and get a new one?  He heard from a friend that if you rub it down with isopropyl alcohol it would get rid of it.  I said that I knew just he folks to ask......thoughts?

IPA would be fine if there isn't too much mold. If its a small inexpensive humi I would personally toss it. Make sure if you use IPA you let it air dry for a day. Then reestablish the humidity for a week or so and see if the mold returns. Maybe start by keeping cheaper cigars in it until you know it's clear. Good luck!
Billy,
I recently had mold show up in my humidor on the bottom side of a humidifier. I removed it and did nothing inside. It stained the wood a little but there has been no reocurrence. Sounds like it just needs a good airing out-then rehumidify.
yeah i agree Randall, that will take care of it, oh and one thing to monitor the humidity and temp, because if both of them get high in your humidor it will come back. It should all come out fine!
I never had mold in my humidors but I would be very skeptical on using anything other than distilled water to clean it. I agree with Josh Carnes that if it's an inexpensive humidor and the mold is bad just toss it and invest in a new one. Depending on what your brother smokes a new well seasoned $50.00-$80.00 humidor could save hundreds of dollars in cigars.

Free humidor, mold, sitting in porous wood = no thanks.

No need to potentially ruin cigars for something so trivial.  There are plenty of ways to safely store cigars while trying to aquire a cedar lined humidor.

Eric,

Be specific about the statement "there are plenty of ways to safely store cigars".  I am thinking about airing out my 500 count humidor and keep puttting it off because I am not sure how to "keep" my cigars while I re-season it.

Thanks.

Bill - do you have 500 sticks?

Gunns resolution is perfect.  You can also use tupperware, double lined freezer bags, mason jars ......... really anything that will hold a seal.  The cooler is, obviously, the much longer term solution but any of these things will work for someone on a short term basis.
