We had to put our beloved German Shepherd down yesterday. He was diagnosed with a torn ACL a year ago and in the last few days, he stopped eating, could not walk or stand. If he did stand, he collapsed on the bum rear leg.
We have been giving him Deramaxx for pain. I did some research and it turns out this is a dangerous drug that may have hastened his demise.
I am so angry at my vet for not telling me about the side effects. They're lethal. There was a huge class action lawsuit against them and they settled.
Zeke was the perfect man's dog. He was smart as a whip. The perfect companion. I even put a twin bed in our bedroom for him to sleep with us at night on something soft.
I have been crying for 24 hours,
We had to put down our 14 year old cat last year.
I just am getting too old for this. No more pets.

That sucks bro, nothing harder than letting go of a dear friend. I've had dogs all my life and with that amazing friendship and loyalty comes the inevitable end. We have 4 dogs ourselves right now, 2 of them are reaching the end of their lifespans and I'm not looking forwards to it or having to help my kids through it.
Much love man.. sit back, fire up a good smoke and reflect.
Permalink Reply by Arturo on January 10, 2012 at 1:37pm I'm so sorry to read the words of your loss! Having had to put my first dog down about 12 years ago, I swore I'd never get another, but within three months, went to the local shelter and got the one I have right now. Now, he's getting close to the end and I just don't know if I'll be able to cope. Doggy endings come way too soon, especially as WE age. While I'd like to say I won't be getting another to replace the one who replaced my first one, I know I will. Dammit...they leave such a hole in our hearts when they leave us.......

I'll be sure to pass on your info to my niece in Denver. She is an equine Veterinarian, but is presently working at a small animal clinic. If she is unaware of that pain med, she won't be after I pass on the sad news of your dog's needless demise. Next to horses, dogs are her favorites.
