Fellow Herfsters,

After having tried many spirits with cigars I have come to the conclusion red wine and cigars are a good match.  Zinfandel, Burgundy and Pinot Noir pair very well with a good stick.  I like a piece of chocolate along with this setting.  Just sayin', whaddya think?

I like a nice merlot with a good full bodied stick. As for chocolate, I prefer danish dark chocolate from a company called Ingeborgs out of Solvang, CA specificly thease little disks of dark chocolate called kringlers http://www.ingeborgs.com/products/!productdetails&ProductID=25&...  Growing up a friend of the family owned that company, and to this day I have not found better chocolate anywhere. their milk chocolate is fantastic as well, but with cigars I perfer the dark.

Scott,

Sounds like you know what you lik.e!  .Dark chocolate is supposed to be good for ya too.  Solvang is a place I have been through many times.  The focus of "Sideways".

Yeah solvang is pretty fun, I grew up in Buellton 3 miles away. If you happen back there stop in to ingeborgs all their chocolates are AMAZING.

Sideways, that movie still haunts me...

Scott

A great place to grow up I'm sure.  Beautiful part of the state.  Why does "Sideways" haunt you?

The scene in the house with the husband....

Randall,

My favorite wine is a tawny Australian port called Whiskers Blake.  It runs about 15-16 bucks a bottle.  Unfortunately it is so popular around here that I can find it only once in a while.  It has a nice smokey bite to it that really sets it apart from other ports I have tried.

Big dog,

Port is an interesting quaff.  Packs a wallop!  I used to drink a little Harvey's Bristol Cream when the weather turned cold.

I've never consumed enough at a sitting to get walloped.  :-D

I have never had any port. I have seen some chocolate port at the local specialty store, but I couldent wrap my head around chocolate wine.
I agree wholeheartedly with the red wine recommendations here. Especially a nice Cabernet Sauvigon. Trying to cut down on the rich meals, but red wine and a cigar after dinner is a pleasure that is hard to resists...and I rarely resist! I have found one locally (New Jersey) that is not a full bodied as the normal Cab, but a little more so than your everyday Pinot or Merlot. It is Canyon Oaks, and believe it or not it runs at most $4.50 a bottle and easily tastes like it could be a $15 bottle.

Brian,

I'll keep my eye out for that one.  Lately I have found some good bottles at Trader Joe's. "La Grania" is a real decent Syrah for $4.99 a bottle!

Unfortunately I live in the not so great state of NJ and most Grocery stores cannot sell liquor. I have a Trader Joe's about 7 miles from me, but they don't sell wine :(
