The Aurora CO shooting.
Let's see what kind of interest this thread develops. I don't know if there was a sign posted outside the theater that "No firearms allowed!"
If there was, it did not deter the shooter.
So, my question is, If someone in that theater had a concealed carry, perhaps some lives might have been saved. This inches me forward in my pursuit for CC.
Your thoughts?

It is sad to see the pain and agony these poor people are experiencing right now. I asked a friend from the area why wasn't anyone else armed and able to defend themselves? Couldn't answer it either. He does have a CC and as a previous sheriff department cop he always carries. I do have a CC with reciprocity in 32 of the 50 states and l carry even when I see the signs...there's no need to flaunt nor advertise...I just conduct my business and leave. So I say yes get your CC and protect yourself and those you love.
The other thing that annoys me is what kind of imbecile takes a three month old and other very small children to a midnight show. Haven't they heard of babysitters? Granted the shooting could have occurred at anytime but where the bloody hell did common sense go?

Yes that chain of theatres has a policy of disarming the good guys. And in response to this incident you can bet that some other theatres that are currently not posted will do so in total unthinking-but-emoting-like-crazy mode.
TbM that guy in Colorado--be damned if I'll ever mention his name--would have been hard to stop because of the armor but using something 9mm and up in power would have eventually shut him down or slowed him enough for others to jump in and perhaps stomp him to death. This incident also points out the reason I carry a flashlight along anyplace/anytime it could get dark enough to need it.

I feel for the victims and families affected from this horrific crime. I also feel for the law-abiding citizens who were in the theater and who do have a CCW license, they obeyed the law by not bringing a firearm into a facility that choose to have a no firearms allowed policy. If just one person in the theater broke the law and had a firearm to protect themselves, there could quite possibly have been many less victims. As of this writing I haven't heard whether or not the shooter had a CCW. This tragedy is just one instance of very few in the country where a madman who lives in a pro gun state appears to have went ballistic and killed for what appears to be for no reason what so ever. I'm sure the Anti Gun Nannies will again use this latest and sad isolated tragedy as a reason to fight to condem handguns and so called "assault type weapons" which is a term typically used by Anti Gun Nannies. My feeling is it's an assault weapon or it isn't. IMHO had any law abiding citizen been able to carry a CCW the theater, the shooter would have been shot and killed on site and the real hero should have been awarded a hero's medal. This piece of shit scumbag surrendered to the police without any fight whatsoever, after killing 12 innocent law-abiding .
I live in Illinois, the only state in the union which has no laws on the books at all to get a CCW and also cannot carry a knife with a blade over 3".
As of Friday July 20, 2012 at approximately 11:30 A.M CST the city of Chicago had 230 illegal gunfire homicides since January 1, 2012, making it a proud #1 in the nation. It's the weekend now so you count on another 6-8 law abiding gunshot deaths, if we're lucky this weekend only because 1/2 of those. Hopefully I'll be here to update you on the weekend Monday It's also a known fact theres a number of Illinois proud citizens who break the law every day. These people would rather explain their actions in court rather then 6' under.

Terrible, the things people will do to one another. While someone in the audience with a CCWL and .45 might have saved at least 1/2 the people killed, I wonder if we'd have more George Zimmerman-like incidents as well.
Going out into the deeper philosophical waters.. if the criteria is applied of spiritual life being paramount to a person's well-being; which is the worse mass-murderer, the gunman, or the movie theater?

I also wonder about Emmett Till, Derrion Albert, Thurman Williams, Trayvon Martin incidents in addition to mass murdered people in schools around the world. It sickens me everytime there is mass-murder.
And the modality of mass-murder isn't as important as the act.
Whether the mass-murder act is by jet airliner, bombs, guns, knives, poison or by bare hand ~ it is a horrific act and should not be tollerated by society. Victims like students, children, gay men, student nurses, office workers, whole communities, cult members or soldiers is tragic.
In my humble opinion,~ Society as a whole has become numb to death. Death is such a common occurance in video games, movies, books and nightly news... we become less concerned or less effected by the violent act when it happens. Our society is surrounded by fictional death that actual death falls on dead nerves of the masses.
Would Conceal Carry stopped this mass-murder... maybe. Would CC have stopped Gacey, Dahamer, Nagasaki, Speck or Auschwitz ? highly doubtful. The World has mad-men. Always has. Always will. It can be anyone @ anytime. The guy who just lost his job or some General with a power play. A preacher with an agenda or a misfit student... So many variables no one could ever prevent their sick actions from happening.
I would 'like' to think a moral, God Believing society would only help, but that's my altrustic up-bringing speaking. I'm not so altrustic to think to would ever happen. I just have a hard time grasping mass-murder and the 'whys'.
Why does this happen?
Why didn't we see it coming?
Why didn't somebody listen to that quiet kid?

TbM are you serious about getting the concealed carry license? Don't get mad at me for saying this but you been in 'woulda coulda shoulda' mode on this subject for a long time now. Think of the carry gun as a piece of gear you may never need--like a spare tire in the trunk--but if you do it's worthless to you left at home.
Ohio's been issuing the licenses since 2004 and by now there are less restrictions and the whole process normally gets completed pretty quick and easy. Although there are some pictures of you at Cigar Fest that you shouldn't let the Clermont County sheriff see! ;)

There is an elderly grandfather in my area who was carrying his concealed weapon, when a group of young adults entered the store and announced they were robbing it, he shot all 3 in the legs and butt. They ran and later tried to tell the police they were attacked in a different area. All are behind bars charged with armed robbery. Turns out they had robbed and injured the customers at several stores before that.

It seems that the s.o.b. in Aurora wasn't wearing ballistic armor but merely a nylon 'tac' vest. No more protection than a bookbag. Sure wish somebody would have been able/willing to shoot back at him. Very sad. :(

Yea, Matt I like that story too...it has a good ending. With respect to the theater shootings, it sure would've shortened the confrontation and saved a few lives in the process.

I think the question I'm fumbling with is just how absolute is the Second Amendment? It's crystal clear that citizens have a Constitutional right to own and bear arms - a right I support. No right is absolute, however - the right to own a handgun or a rifle does not extend to owning a tank or an atomic weapon. Semiautomatic rifles capable of firing 50 to 60 rounds per minute clearly fall into the same category as tanks or even atomic weapons. They are designed to do one thing - kill people.
So, I think some restrictions are a matter of common sense. No one hunts with these kinds of weapons - even a single shotgun is all you need to take down big game - so what's the point of owning them? Pleasure? Of course, no law is going to stop someone like the Colorado gunman - who was by all accounts intelligent and meticulous. But if a few restrictions can prevent him or someone like him from purchasing with relative ease the kind of weaponry he brought to the theater, that might save a few more lives. And that's worth it to me.
As for concealed carry, Arizona's got it - and yet no one had their gun on hand to stop yet another crazed gunman from shooting at and killing unarmed citizens, including a little girl. And to date, petty crimes aside, I've yet to see a citizen use their concealed handgun to stop massacres like Arizona or Colorado. But to be consistent in my logic - I'll use the same argument as I did above: if concealed carry has the potential to save lives and stop a well-armed gunman from killing more innocent people during a rampage...maybe it's worth it, too.
