The Order of the Burning Leaf at the Maryland Renaissance Festival

As many of you know, I have recently gotten very interested in attending Renaissance Faires.  I especially am interested in those that are cigar-friendly.

One of those is the Maryland Ren Festival, which started last weekend and goes every weekend through October 24th (plus Labor Day Monday).  For more information on the Festival, check out their website:http://www.rennfest.com/

I discovered through the Internet that the cigar-lovers who attend the Maryland Ren Fest have created a club for themselves called "the Order of the Burning Leaf".  The OBL meets every Saturday and Sunday while the Fest is going on at one of the pubs, and then after a while they move to another pub.  For more information on the OBL, check out their page on the MD Friends of Faire message board:http://mdfof.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=obl

My girlfriend Therese and I will be attending the MD Festival on Sunday October 10th, when it just happens that two of the OBL members are getting married at the Festival, and we have been invited to the ceremony and reception.  So you can see that they are very friendly and open, and I encourage anyone else who is considering attending the MD Ren Fest to get in touch with them.

Announcement in today's NYTimes (ouch, it hurts typing that last word) social pages:

The Duke and Duchess of Park dé Slope hereby proclaim that they and their posse will promptly depart from their chateau to attend the pomp and regalia in the neighboring fiefdom of the Kingdom of Very Merry Land. We wish the whole entourage and them a safe trip and return.
The able and brave Baron Von Bristow has been left behind in case of a surprise attack from the evil heretics of the Isle of Manhattan.
Three cheers for 'da Duke of PdS and BvB.
Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
I would go in a heartbeat if I was closed to Maryland or had the time/money to make the trip. Have a blast!
Not necessarily! I heard of one in Michigan - not sure if it's the one in Clarkston - that is very cigar-friendly. Others that I've heard to be cigar-friendly in the Midwest include the Minnesota Faire and the Bristol Faire (the latter is close to Chicago I believe). And if you ever find yourself in Florida in the winter, check out the Bay Area Ren Fest in Tampa, which runs from late February to early April. They have a really nice cigar booth, and do a Renaissance Smoker every afternoon - for $10 you get two free cigars, two beers and chicken wings and other snacks.
Refreshing ales! All they give you in Tampa is Budweiser... But they do have great bawdy entertainment at Tampa's "Smoker" also - "I put my hand upon her thigh, yo ho, yo ho..."
This sounds like a great idea. I guess I have to wait until next year to get in on it. We really enjoy the PA Ren Faire which is only 45 min. - 1 hour away.
Ha = just another reason for Karl to don the "magic tights"...
Karl, I thought you were interested in Renaissance Faires for quite sometime. How long have you been taking part in them?
For about 3 years. My first one was in Tampa, the Bay Area Renaissance Faire (which I've now been to 3 times). I've now attended three others: Sterling in upstate New York (twice), Maryland (once, last weekend) and NY Renaissance Festival which is held in Tuxedo, NY (over the last 2 summers, a total of about 9 visits).

Maryland was pretty amazing. Therese and I are hoping to go there again next fall - it may become my favorite once I get to know it a little better.

As for smoking, Tampa is great and I gather Maryland is also, although there was so much for me to take in, it being my first time, that I didn't really have the chance to look for the cigar smokers.
