Me and Thomas Slagle (member on SC) went shop-hoppin today and discovered, Nestled away in an unsuspecting corner of cedar hill tx is a cigar shop called Tobacco Cabana. It is a VERY small shop; no lounge, no walk in humidor, just cabinets of cigars, pipes, accessories,an awesome dog and an amazing tobacconist named Jim Klipp. I can only rave about the service and experience. He has pipes of every sort, many different boutique cigars and tones of knowledge. A real personable guy. I realized, what i call, the difference between a true tobacconist and a BoTL and just a cigar shop when i went down TX-67 not more than 2 miles to 3R's Cigars where the second i walked in i felt watched. I was carded at the door (standard procedure i know) FOLLOWED into the humidor by an employee who seemed to be a CoTL. Anyway the employee did not really offer any info or anything specific about certain cigars. Then on the way out, the owner or manager gave us a look as if we had stoeln something or "if you're not going to buy anything then get out."
Anyway all this to say, Jim will be getting lots of my business and many recomendations. I'm sure Thomas will post here, and if anyone in the DFW TX area has been to either please share your experience!
Ben,
A nice surprise for you to find a knowledgeable owner like that. I agree that a lot of owners of B&Ms are no help and seem even hostile. Some of them are nonsmokers themselves and seem to even look down on their own patrons! I probably learned more about cigars from a guy that operated a cigar business out of his pickup truck, just a part time thing for him as he was a full time fireman. Anyway he would pull up to my house and bring in a humidor well stocked with many different kinds of smokes and when I would ask about this or that he'd say "These are very strong" or "Nice and mild" . One owner I used to buy from had the same comment whenever you would ask him about a particular stick...."It's the best!" That made me laugh. Anyway, have a swell New Year.
lol yes this shop was amazing and the owner vary cool and laid back, helped out with any questions about the small name boutique cigars that i didnt know about. he wasnt ever trying to sell me anything, just talkin about this cigar or that one.
Out of the many cigar shops I've been to in DFW, Tobacco Cabana is a favorite. I like the selection, the pricing, and the hospitality. Jim knows a lot regarding just about everything in the shop; his cigars, pipes, tobaccos, etc., and this is hard to come by. I like the glass door wall cabinet humidors; I have not ended up with a stale cigar to date. Always worth the trip to the Cabana.
3R's has a *nice* lounge, nice walk in humidor, but just like you said seems rough around the edges on treating customers like guests, and sketchy on cigar details. Maybe just not a lot of passion (for lack of a better word) for the trade by the attendents I've come across there. It's always rewarding to find salepeople that actually know their product and love their work.
