What are your favorite films? They don't have to be art-house masterpieces - they're just the ones that, whenever they appear on tv, you have to watch them. They're the films that, when they come out in that special edition dvd set, you're the first person to buy a copy from your local video store. And if 10 is not enough (or too much!) don't sweat it. Just let me in on your favorites. I'll tell you mine in the next post...
Ahh...we had the guns down...and growing up 20 miles north of San Francisco beleive me there were groceries and drinking water to last a few weeks just incase of a quake...lol
Ditchdigger, you are too much. I see a string of chop-sockie films in there. I had a couple of years when I was trying to see every Hong Kong martial arts movie I could get my hands on. Which reminds me of another film that should be on my list: The Heroic Trio (1993) with Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung. I have that one on dvd, in case anyone wants to borrow it...
Hey, we might have to start a Social Cigar dvd trading library...
my number one is:The Fifth Element! (sit there and tear it apart and you will understand)
Run Lola Run (in German!!!) Thanks Karl, everyone else thinks im nuts for loving this movie!
The Third Man
Double Indemnity
Polyester
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science (lol!)
Liberty Heights
The Boondock Saints
Brigadoon
Fletch
Citizen Kane
American Beauty
Spun
The Secretary
and of course i love the slapstick like Superbad and Anchorman!:)
ooooh Run Lola Run, hmmmm, I forgot how much I liked that movie...I loved the first five minutes of the pilot episode of Alias and it's tribute to Run Lola Run!
I forgot about "Memento."
Watched "Batman Begins" the other night while relaxing with a stiff drink and a cigar with the wife and thought that it was a lot better than I remember.
Angeline, that is a great list. Yes, Run Lola Run is beyond sensational. The music, the cartoon portions, all the crazy camera work. That brought Tom Tykwer, the director, to my attention. There are still a few of his movies I haven't seen - I'll have to track them down this weekend!!!! But "Heaven" with Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi is another favorite directed by him.
And of course Franka Potente is also really cool. Just her name. Too bad they killed her off in the second Bourne movie. After giving her long blonde hair (not sure if I like that or not). That hurt me. I hate characters being used like that!
Secretary. OMG. Maggie Gyllenhaal (however you spell her name). Have liked Spader since his Sex Lies & Videotape days. And White Palace with Susan Sarandon. Pairing those two weird but oddly hot actors was a stroke of genius. She was also great in Stranger than Fiction with Will Ferrell, SC's greatest comedian of all time. And she smoked a cigar when she was on Dinner for Five on IFC, cementing her credentials as one cool cat.
Aint never seen Boondock Saints. Double Indemnity! Great choice.
Here's mine, in no particular order (except for how I remember them)
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. The Godfather Saga
3. The Empire Strikes Back (the best of the Star Wars movies)
4. King Kong (the original 1933 classic, with all due respect to Peter Jackson)
5. Goldfinger (I love the Bond movies...but, if I had to pick one, this is it - prime Connery, great villain, and Pussy Galore)
6. Jaws
7. Casablanca ( Rick's a drunkard, and that makes him a citizen of the world)
8. Godzilla
9. North By Northwest ( Hitchcock's a genius, but this is my favorite of his...)
10. Citizen Kane ( a classic that deserves every bit of praise it's been showered with, brilliant filmmaking, great acting...and flat out fun).
There's more, but those are the ones that I find I watch with the most frequency. I've enjoyed seeing everyone else choices - "Double Indemnity" is one hell of a film...and I might just end up revising my list!!
10. Pan's Labyrinth
9. V for Vendetta
8. Poolhall Junkies
7. The Hustler
6. The color of Money
5. 300
4. Saw
3. Fight Club
2. Wrong Turn
1. Superman Returns
Note this list is subject to change depending on whatever.
I don't know about anyone else but my philosophy about movies is the same as with girls, " Love them all and the good one's twice. "
