Welcome to pipe smoking! A lot of times, a tobacconist will steer new pipe smokers to very sweet Aromatic tobaccos, flavored with things like Vanilla. While these smell pleasant in the pouch (and to non-smokers in the room), they tend to smoke hot and wet. Instead of taking the aromatic route, explain to the tobacconist that you're an experienced cigar smoker and ask him to find you a medium-bodied English tobacco. You don't want anything too strong to start with, but a nice, middle-of-the-road English is Artisan's Blend (by Ashton). A slightly lighter tobacco is Early Morning Pipe by Dunhill. If you want to go a bit heavier, try Frog Morton by McClelland. I hope these suggestions are helpful. Please feel free to contact me for any pipe advice or questions. I've been at it for nearly 30 years :)
