I found a jpeg of a 16th century woodcut of one of my favorite Renaissance composers, Josquin des Prez, on the Internet. I printed it out in two sizes: one about the size it would be to fit on the inside of my forearm, and one much larger where you could see all the lines very clearly. I took the two printouts to DareDevil one afternoon, talked to Chuck about what I wanted, and he made an appointment for a few days later to do the tattoo.
I arrived to discover that Chuck had used the smaller print to create a stencil of Josquin, and had a second stencil of the lettering of Josquin's name and his dates. He suggested, and I agreed, that he would use the woodcut/stencil as the basis of the tattoo, and then add some shading to make it more life-like and more of a portrait. In not more than an hour, Chuck completed the tattoo. Yes, it did hurt, but bearably so, and I did bleed some which didn't bother me. I was overjoyed at the result, and after about a week of healing, my tat looked fantastic.
I had a great first tat experience, and I'm looking forward to getting another one in the next 6 months or so.
