I'm curious what types of wine people are drinking with cigars, any one type of wine varietal go better then most? I am a novice cigar aficionado and curious, but will be getting more into cigars as I go.

What are your thoughts, best brands to try together etc?

I love to drink wine and smoke cigars!
I like a nice merlot with a cigar.
Would be nice to hear what others think...suggestions?
I enjoy a glass of Merlot or Malbec with my cigars, but my favorite cigar wine would be a nice Port, and it doesn't have to be expensive either. There are some very nice Ports at quite reasonable prices out there.
I agree. I love a good merlot with my cigars. I have not developed a palet for the Ports yet.
I absolutely agree with you Pedro, i work for Cigar Lounge and quite frankly even though i am not a big port fan just because often it is too sweet for me, i think port goes absolutely great with cigars, especially with full bodied cigars. Camachos for example would be great with a nice 30 year tawny, preferably dows or warres.
What I like to drink while a smoke a nice mild cigar like an ashton or davidoff is ice wine. There are a lot of varieties of ice wines but since they are lighter body they do not overwhelm the mild cigar taste.
But at the end i think the combinations are a matter of taste, different people like different things.
I'm with Pedro, Malbec and replace Merlot with Grenache or Grenacha (So American and Spain and maybe misspelled) Tempranillo, French Burgundies, Rhones. I love Port, Spanish and Italian fortified wines.
Just and add, I think a red with some edge to it and enough body so it's not overcome by the cigar.
I mainly enjoy merlots as well. There is a red zifindel that I think is off the chain. It is called "Seven Deadly Zins" This wine partners well with cigars.
I'm a big fan of Cabernet Sauvignon! One of my favorite California reds is the Cakebread Cabernet Sauvignon(1997). Powerful, smoky, coffee aromas. Opulent, ripe, spicy rich fruit. Amazing intensity with lovely complexity and great length. Delicious.

obviously the classic pairing of port and cigars is the easy way out. For someone who cant drink a bottle of port within a 3 week period, some other wines i would recommend are full bodied shirazs and merlots from any country in the southern hemisphere. Bold red wines from Spanish regions like castilla y leon, murcia and la mancha offer great bangs for the buck. You need a good amount of fruit and tannic backbone to stand up to a good cigar. Not every wine works so its a bit of hit and miss. I still haven't found a winning formula. I usually stick with a darker beer or a cognac most of the time.

I love ports! And to have some port with cigars is the optimal combo. My most recent favorite port is the Hardy's Whisker Australian Tawny Port...that port has a nice smoky finish and its not too sweet...goes well with quite a few cigars including the Oliva Master Blend or Oliva Serie G.
Dre,
I actually have a suggestion for you. If you like beer with cigars you should definitely try Scaldis beer. Its an excellent belgium beer known as the "Schotch of beers" just be careful while drinking as it comes on small botles but this is not the average beer you drink everyday, it has 12% alcohol, slight sweet taste and before you realize you are drinking beer you might find yourself quite light headed:)
Jeta, I have drunk many many good Belgian beers, but I've never encountered Scaldis before! I've drunk ones like Chimay and Leffe and Corsendonck Brown Ale while I smoke, but there are many others I would try if I had the opportunity; however, the cigar bars in NYC are bigger on wine and spirits, not so much on beer. I gather Cigarmasters has a good beer selection, eh? If that's the case, then I really need to pay you a visit, hopefully for a long weekend so I can really sample a wide selection!

I'm not a big wine drinker - I have had port a few times with cigars, which I like. I'm sure as time goes on I will experiment more with what I drink with my cigars.
