I was reading a reply by Dre on the Beer and Cigar Forums and this group is dedicated to him.

We all seem to enjoy some sort of beverage with our cigars, this topic is all over our board. Coffee, Beer, and Spirits of all kinds are discussed often on our pages and everyone has contributed great information and opened a lot of eyes to other options for enjoying our passion. As my local wine club's Senior Director of Events and a avid cigar smoker members of the club are always asking me for cigar/wine pairing advise so every week I will touch on this subject.

First Rule:
Light Bodied Cigar - White Wine
Full Bodied Cigar - Red Wine

By far the most popular wine and cigar pair is the 7 Deadly Zins collection by Michael David, this wine goes well with almost every cigar and both men and women can enjoy it ( nothing better than fine wine, fine cigars, and a fine woman ).

If you enjoy Reds like I do try a nice Pinot Noir with a mid to full bodied cigar, one of my favorite combinations is the Rocky Patel Edge Maduro with a glass of 94 to 02 Cabernet Sauvignon, but you could also pair it with a Malbec or Syrah.

Fuente makes a great cigar and they go best with a 90's Bordeaux.

The King of cigar smoking and wine comes courtesy of Winston Churchill are beloved cigar icon. On many of his trips abroad to create such great works he often would relax with a glass of rich port. Tawny Port is the best for this, with almond and other nutty flavors it is perfect for almost any cigar ritual, the older the port the better it is. This might be a little more costly but well worth it, if you can try to get your hands on a 40 year or older, unforgettable is all I can say ( or remember ). The cigar of choice to go with this glass should be no other than a Churchill full in body and from the Dominican Republic.

I forgot to mention the great 05' Echelon Central Pinot Noir I'm drinking tonight it is going down great with these Ashton Sungrowns.
Thank you for inviting me to this discussion, Tony. I very frequently have a glass of wine with my cigars. We tend to favor the semi-sweet range. Niagra and Riesling are two of my favorites. We usually like to have a variety of red, white and blush in that taste range. However, our wine collection has dwindled in our attempt to build up our selection of smokes.
For everyday drinking, we usually pick up a box or two of Franzia, Crisp White. It tastes incredibly like a decent german riesling, for a fraction of the price. Most any evening you can find me having a glass with whatever cigar I choose to smoke. I haven't been disappointed yet with any cigar combined with the Franzia.
There is much similarity in the nature of cigars and wine, in my opinion. The storage conditions and the variables in tastes make them a good paring.
I"m not usually real hung up on gender issues in cigar smoking. That being said, from this female's prospective, drinking from stemware while smoking a cigar definitely softens the picture. However, I drink coffee, vodka, wine coolers, malts, tequila, or anything else that strikes my fancy in accompaniment to a good cigar.
great writing and insight, but remember this, wine will go up in value and is considered an investment, we always end up smoking the cigars so our investment literally goes up in smoke.
lol you have a very good point there! unfortunately, neither lasts long in our house!
I do so enjoy an aged Tawney Port with my fine cigars. My first time enjoying this wonderful combination was a 30yr Fonseca and a Davidoff Special R, un-stinkin believable!

The Tawney has a sweet aftertaste that actually grabs the cigar smoke flavor and clings them both to your mouth.
Incredible!

Recently I have beeb sampling , some Austrailian offerings,I'll report back on my reviews.
now that is what I'm talking about, 30 yr old port, fantastic. I look forward to your report on those Aussie wines.
Tonight we are opening a bottle that I have aged for 10yrs, it is part of a case that I am attempting to age in stages for 50yrs. Since I started to cellar my wine they have taken on new characters and built new body on their own. I used to have them in a wine rack and accessible to household elements such as air/temp changes, even though the room was kept at protective temps it still was effecting the wine. So my advise to any of our SC members that decide to get into wine & cigar pairing it is worth the investment to cellar the wine at all times, even if you plan on drinking it on a weekly basis.

Wine: 95' Caymus Special Selection Cabernet
open and air for 2 hours in a tulip decanter

Full body with a ripe aroma of black cherry and plum 97 Wine Spectator Rating

Cigar: Camacho Triple Maduro
So many nights of wine and cigars has gone by since the last post that I could not even begin to list them all, I can tell you it was fun finding out what goes well with what. One of the most important things I discovered was that not many good wines go with cigars, they just leave a horrible after taste and ruined both the wine and cigar experience. In my opinion craft beer or spirits go much better with so many cigars that I suggest we go with that, however I can safely say I enjoyed the lighter bodied smoke with the whites.
