Frickin'-A-Right!  As pathetic as she has been her entire adult life, she shouldn't even rank a headline next to those poor souls in Norway. Amy Winehouse died... big woop.  I can't believe anyone can still use the word…

RIP, Amy Winehouse!

I was so shocked and dismayed to hear earlier today that Amy Winehouse, the British soul-jazz singer, has died.  It was obvious for years that she was not long for this world, with her penchant for self-destructive behavior, but her talent was enormous and I have enjoyed her music from the start!  To me she is one of the most original and compelling musicians in the popular music realm to come along in quite a long time.  So her downward spiral and now death leaves a big hole in the music…See More

Now that's the way to start off the holiday weekend!

I just want to say thanks to St. Jimbob for taking some time away from his great easterly family journey to meet up with some of his fellow SCers at A Little Taste of Cuba in lovely Princeton, New Jersey. Little Taste is a primo spot in a very toney and appealing downtown.  The fellow working the shop was very friendly, the regulars I met there welcomed me right into their midst, the humidor had lots of nice selections (I bought a couple of EP Carillo Short Runs), all around a really fine…See More

Reports of MMK's death are slightly exaggerated!

Posted on February 28, 2011 at 3:36pm 5 Comments

I will admit, I am sad that MMK finally has quit Social Cigar.  But he's been teetering on leaving for more than a year.  It got to the point where, when I heard something about him getting in a fracas with somebody and threatening to leave, my reaction was "oh, that again?"  And it's not as if the guy has died.  Not by a long shot...

Another thing going on here for more than a year has been this yearning for the good old days, whatever that was.  I am relatively new to…

Xmas Vacation 2010-11, part one

Posted on January 20, 2011 at 1:32pm 1 Comment

I know I told a lot of folks that I was going away for the Holidays, so I thought it might be fun to tell you a little about where we went and what transpired.

So basically, Therese and I went to Naples, FL to spend Christmas with her parents, who live there, and then we spent a week vacationing in Miami, returning to New York City on January 1st.

We flew in Naples on Wednesday, December 22nd and Therese's parents, Sam and Eileen, picked us up at the airport…

It's all about the money, my friends...

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 11:00am 10 Comments

Let us begin with a sermon from St. Henry Miller:

"To walk in money through the night crowd, protected by money, lulled by money, dulled by money, the crowd itself a money, the breath money, no least single object anywhere that is not money. Money, money everywhere and still not enough! And then no money, or a little money, or less money, or more money but money always money . and if you have money , or you don't have money, it is the money that…

Charming Karl's Adventures at the NY Renaissance Faire 2010

Posted on September 16, 2010 at 3:47pm 0 Comments

This year, when it came time to make plans to attend the NY Renaissance Festival, held just an hour's drive from NYC, there was an additional factor for me to consider: my girlfriend Therese. Would she want to come? Would she dress up in period clothes, or go "mundane" as we call those people who wear everyday clothes?

Well, the answers were yes, she would come, and yes, she would get herself some period clothes.

After looking at our schedules, we decided to go three… Continue

A reward of $1,000 was offered for information leading to the capture and conviction of a man robbing taxi drivers. The man turned himself in and demanded the reward as a result. He received a 20 year sentence for aggravated robbery instead.

The World's Largest Catsup Bottle stands proudly next to Route 159, just south of downtown Collinsville, Illinois. This unique 170 ft. tall water tower was built in 1949 by W.E. Caldwell Company for the G.S. Suppiger catsup bottling plant. In 1995, due to the efforts of the Catsup Bottle Preservation Group, this piece of local history was saved from demolition and beautifully restored to its original appearance.

So many visitors were taking his cigars, so Thomas Edison devised a plan to discourage the practice. He had several boxes of cigars custom-made with cabbage leaves. But when the offensive smelling stogies were delivered to his office, his secretary sent them on to his home where his wife went ahead and packed the items in his luggage, and the offensive items accompanied Mr. Edison on his business trip. This just goes to show you that even a genius can't outsmart his wife.
