When I go out for the eve or I'll be gone for a few days, I take the number of cigars I’ll be traveling with and cut them. Then I take a dry puff to make sure the draw is ok and put them back in the cello. That way I know I won't be disappointed when I fire one up.

A good way to tell if a cigar is really fresh or not is by giving it the "pinch" test. Very gently pinch the cigar between your thumb and forefinger in several places along the length of the cigar. It should feel firm with a little spring to it - not hard. If it feels like a piece of dead wood or if it’s excessively soft and spongy in spots, don’t buy it.
