My Sisters and Brothers from Other Mothers!!!

A while back Rev got some fantastic feedback on what the colossal congregation of the NOLa Church of Smokes wanted to know more of about the Crescent City. Well ye have asked now ye shall receive the first installment of New Orleans 101. This installment - What To Drink.

There's a great misconception that grips visitors to The 504 that they must be running from their hotel, hostel, guest house or tent underneath the Claiborne Overpass @ Tulane Ave straight to, without passing Geaux, Pat O'Brien's to have its signature drink, The Hurricane. Nah, Rev ain't got nothing against no Hurricane - other then that one b-i-t-c-h named Katrina. More folks than Methuselah had years have found themselves paying bent-over tribute to the porceline idol thanks to the drink's POTENT and (some say sickly) sweet combination of high octane liquor and red fruity punch.

But Brothers and Sisters, Rev knows that this is a group of CIGAR SMOKERS and he can't in good conscience recommend you try pairing that tall drink of liquid candy with anything any self-respecting herfer is gonna be ignitifcating on vacation or any other time. For accompanying ANY smoke, Rev gonna recommend THE Official Cocktail of New Orleans (and Benjamin Button): The Sazerac.

Listen to the Rev nah, New Orleans is the home of the professional drinkers, and The Sazerac is NOT something you're gonna be knocking back like some kind of frozen daiquiri. This is an elegant sipping drink made with rye, absinthe and angostura bitters. Invented by a pharmacist before the turn of the civil war, this drink is the perfect accompaniment to any cigar, especially one that is medium to full bodied. And you can smoke one as you sit outside at The Columns Bar on St. Charles where you can puff away an evening watching the streetcars lazily carry people downtown and back.

Believe The Rev when he tells you to skip the Hurricane, The Hand Grenade, The Flaming Dr. Pepper or any other pretender to the NOLa Cocktail Throne...put your faith in the Sazerac, baby. You will not be disappointed.

Peace, Love and Smokes...The Rev

Excellent!!! Like Martinis, Sazeracs can be adjusted to taste so Rev ususally asks the barkeep to make his on the dry side.

I myself fell in love with the sazerac, so much in fact I had a bottle of absinth imported from Francemjust to be historically accurate with the drink. As I was once told, Hurricanes are for tourists, Sazeracs are for locals.

Rev,
I won't argue that the Sazerac is THE signature drink of New Orleans. But I must admit that this libation was not to my liking. The drink itself was fine - what threw me off was the strong scent of herbsaint (absinthe) that hung on the glass even after the liquor was tossed. Not being a fan of the strong scent of anise, I found the drink unpalatable.

That said, I was encouraged over brunch - at Commander's Palace - a Pimms Cup, which I completely enjoyed. Like the Mint Julep, this is one of the great Southern drinks that is both refreshing and joyous.

Hand grenades? Hurricanes? Once I became an adult I made it a point to never drink anything named after a weapon or a force of nature.
