Hiya. I've been trying to keep watch on how our statewide smoking ban has impacted businesses. Nothing scientific, just personal observations. Feel free to chime in.

Here in the Cincy area, lots of folks going out to dinner or for drinks just cross the Ohio River and spend their "entertainment dollars" in northern Kentucky. I see it all the time, and do this myself quite often now.

Another town I visit several times a year is Delaware, Ohio, population 30,000 or so (?) about 20 miles north of Columbus. So, not a "border town" like Cincy. Delaware has a college, and a nice downtown area right next door. There is also a decent median income in the region, I'd guess.

Yet since Dec. 2006 or so there have been at least five bars/restarants close up shop, partly if not directly related to the smoking ban, best I can determine. They were all going good before the ban. And the places that are left are not exactly thriving, more like hanging by a thread.

Truly a shame, and disgusting in my opinion.

Chicago is in turmoil also... Lots of 'tents' popping up around town... Bars & restaurants at least are making an attempt to keep the smokers happy & warm. We also got the 15' rule... can't smoke within 15' of the entrance. ' fuckin commies... My fav B&M is getting busier, though.

And then there is that some people, lacking a place to smoke will smoke at home around their kids... :(

I only smoke around my 6 month old if I am in the car, with the windows up, and the circulation set on "interior".

:)

(just kidding for you people that can't understand my sarcastic jokes)

When Ohio first passed the smoking ban,the news repoted of several small bars and family eateries closing due to lack of business. Now that it has been over a year,it has not changed.Everyday you see businesses closing down due to lack of customers, and it makes you wonder if the ban is still taking it's toll. And lately have seen many national chanis shutting down for the same reasons.Recently I was in a place eating dinner, and the gentleman in the next booth noticed my cigars in my coat pocket. He was an older guy, looked to be in his late 60's. He mentioned to me that he hated the fact that he could no longer enjoy his favorite smoke after dinner, and he has since tha ban,cut way back on his dining out.Things like that are far too common, and is what is hurting the dining and bar businesses. The government wants to tax the hell out fo tobacco, but wants to restrict how you use it.

Dogs, you just gotta wonder how much bar/restaurant revenues are down in the last 15 months or so in NO!hio, don'tcha?

Talk about crushing the American Dream. As if the current state of the economy isn't making things bad enough for restaurant and bar owners. The gov't has to come through and cut business owners off at the knees.

Brian do you stop in and see Ed up in Delaware? Great shop tucked away in a small town

On topic, the Ohio smoking ban has repercussions that have not been measured or felt by the department of taxation; I am certain that revenue tax on OTP products is down... I guess they will have to look for a raise somewhere else to make up for it...

Yes Dave, Ed's store in Delaware Ohio--Woodland Cigars--is hit for a visit every time I'm up there. He now stays open late on Friday/Saturday nights so that smokers out on the town have a roof over their heads for a sitdown smoke.
