Down goes Michigan. Smoking ban passed

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-mi-smokingban,0,371410.story

"The bill that passed the House five months ago would have exempted casinos, bingo halls, horse tracks, cigar bars and smoke shops from the ban. The Senate stripped those provisions in favor of banning smoking in all workplaces -- though American Indian casinos likely would be exempt because many state laws don't apply there because of tribal sovereignty. "

I was in a shop with Tom, the MI Camacho rep and Christian Eiroa when the news broke. We all immediately got a list of the MI government officials and started pounding the phones. I had to leave but continued to call on my way to my event while Tom and Christian headed down to the local radio station to get their voice heard. In the end, it looks like it's going to pass and will now include the ban of smoking even inside cigar shops. It's a sad day in Michigan. Hopefully some appeals can go through and people can compromise.....

I hate communists. I need to move to a democracy, some place that respects and protects the rights of minorities. ; )

Some place that respects the rights of private property owners. We fought the British Empire in part because our private property rights were being violated.
What are we going to do? It all started with seatbelt laws. When you didn't object to that they knew they had us.

Many Communists despise smoking bans. Trust me.

Unbelievable.

I guess things are just going so great in Michigan these days that thought they could slip this one by us, and we wouldn't notice.

Businesses, college graduates, and people in general are fleeing this state in record numbers because of how bad the situation is, and all the government can do is ban smoking and try to raise taxes.

Keep it up guys ... it's working great.

Another example of a non-smoking bill getting SLAMMED through!

Ridiculous, utterly RIDICULOUS! How many states are we up to now that have fallen to the PC meanderings of state and federal politicians bowing to the majority instead of protecting the minority. I'm all for providing for healthy work environments but c'mon! When it spills over into bars, casinos, and now even smoke shops and HOMES it is RIDICULOUS!! When is someone in government going to step up and decide that we are AMERICA, we are a DEMOCRACY, and that CIVIL RIGHTS are to be cherished not suffocated?!?

"by the people 'for' the people".......................

If you could only see me rolling my eyes.

The American public in general should be rolling their eyes... too many have their blinders on instead... [high, whiny voice] "my government would never do anything to harm me, they only have my best interests at heart". Yeah, tell that to other countries like Communist Russia, Germany [before the wall came down], and China; listen to what they have to say about it.

Don't you know our founding fathers would sit down and weep, and weep!!...... Then they would get up and make a plan to stop this crazy way of thinking. We have a small group of people deciding what "we" need, when "we" need it, and how much " we" need. God help us and give us the strength to stop this mess now before its too late and we don't even have a vote to cast anymore (I'm not sure we still do?) Personally I'm burning up my phone lines to local and state leaders in my state every time I hear of this junk. And you know what I'm not sure that is enought. I am ready to start thinking in different directions. Any thoughts out there,
lets start here on this site, and come together and think up some new ideas......God HELP us!

"... and we don't even have a vote to cast anymore (I'm not sure we still do?) "

That's the most powerful part of your post (IMO). I vote like crazy (against the current Michigan administration). What good did it do?

Petitions don't seem to have any effect, either. Maybe I'm just jaded.

I don't think you're jaded at all. The conspiracy theorist in me says that they take all of our votes, put them in nice coffin-sized boxes and send them down the incinerator chute. They [being the powers that be] then decide who "they" want elected to reach their own ends. The only one I think that has gotten around that recently is Gov. Schwarzenneger [the "Govern'ator"]. Who saw that coming? Cigar Smokin' Arnold for President!!!

Looks like Michigan is joining the ranks!

Thank God for a Government that is so concerned for the health of it's People [sic].

It's also good to see our Government making these laws, to protect US from Ourselves [sic].

I am a firm believer that we need a Nanny State to watch over us and to keep us safe [sic].
