I purchased a DCH-01 Le Veil humidifier and placed it in a desktop humidor with a few cigars, the first 2 days it was fine until i went to work (Monday) and returned in the afternoon to find it pushing 83% in humidity (I lost about 1/3 of my collection as a result of them bursting at the seams), I attempted to calibrate it adjusting the small screw on the bottom of the unit and it has not helped much so in the meantime I can only resort to playing with the settings to attempt to get it just right.

If you have been down this road I would certainly appreciate any feedback on calibrating this unit, I need to also mention that I have a seperate digi to compare to the reading on the Le veil.

Thanks in advance!!!

First of all, I would be this thing is WAY overblown for a desktop humidor. A chest or Cabinet humi, yes, but a little 50 ct desktop is too small for that humidifier.

First thing to do with that puppy is to do a salt test to see how accurate the hygrometer is on it.

Salt test for hygrometer. Mix 1/2 cup of salt with 1/4 cup of distilled water. The mixture forms a slurry, if it dissolves the salt there is too much water. Place cup and hygrometer in a large sealable plastic bag. Place out of direct sun light at room temperature and leave for approximately 8 hours. The humidity should be 75%. Quickly calibrate humidifier to 75% if required and return to bag for 3 or 4 more hours to make sure calibrated correctly. Salt slurry should not come into contact with the hygrometer.

With calibrated hygrometer season the humidor. To do this find an alternative home for your cigars. With an empty humidor wet the inside down lightly with distilled water. Wet all surfaces evenly. Leave the lid open for 2 hours incase you used too much water. Close the box with hygrometer inside check every couple of hours till moisture reaches your desired humidity. Place humidifier inside humidor. Monitor humidity every 8 hours for at least 3 days. If humidity is stable introduce one bundle of cheap ass dog rockets from reliable bug free supplier. Monitor every day for a week. If everything is OK give cheap cigars to the those in need. Should be ready for use.

You shouldn't need to mess with the screws on this model humidifier. I suspect your box was dryer than you realized when you introduced the humidifier and the cigars acted as a sponge. The spanish cedar inside your humidor will help regulate the humidity but not if it is dry. It is time consuming to get the box working but once it is done it should stay regular with little maintenance. If this happens again try using a benign desiccant inside the humidor at the first sign of humidity increase. These can be found in many over the counter medicines such as Zantac. Also be aware that St. Jimbob is quite correct. Your humidifier is for boxes with a capacity of 100 or more cigars, just like a refrigerator you should maintain a 75% load in the humidifier. Less and the cigars soak up the excess moisture.

Thanks for pointing a newb in the right direction, I will certainly give it a shot. As a matter of fact, I salt tested my Hygro last night and when I awoke this morning it was hovering around 57% so I now know that I first have to get a digi-hygro that works properly.

I do need to specify that although it is a desktop it is fairly large (150ct) and my intentions are to invest into a cabinet by end of month as my collection is growing exponentially. Thanks again guys!
