I personally have always thought i would be one of those fantastic Field Army guys who could fix anything with some wire, duct tape and a knife!
So here is Mr. Fix it's story of the day. I rent a 24 foot flat bed rental truck to do some service work for a customer. Driving south on Interstate I-75 about 1/2 way to my destination in Lexington KY, I hear a bang bang bang....
And no Ray, this is not "THE" BANG BANG BANG!
This is serious bang-bang-bang...! I immediately pull over to the right side to investigate the problem. The Mr. Fix it guy in me is already accessing the situation. Blown tire, drive shaft bearing loss...
I go kick the tires. All good!
Nothing dragging!
I'm thinking WTF?
I look at the drive train at the universal joint (a discussion for further discussion at this site), and one of the tie down straps worked loose (a tie down strap is used to secure a the load on a truck and crank it down tight to prevent movement. I did not need to use these tie downs on this trip)
The strap came loose from the passenger side rail. I was not able to see this as it was the first strap [(toward the cab) where I am driving)]. Upon working loose on the passenger side, it is flailing around worse than the dog behind Chevy Chases Family Truckster with the dog tied to the bumper. One good bump kicks the strap with metal end to the drive shaft where it naturally winds around shaft and is banging like fuck till it flies off, or in strap language, has its' orgasm.
So, Mr. fix it in me evaluates the situation. WTF do i do?
I have no tools.
But I do have a Vector Butane table top lighter
I also have a Social Cigar Cigar Cutter!
What more do I need?
The tie down strap is right behind the bearing and the hit is so bad that the bearing is out of place. The friction is so high on the fiberglass/plastic strap it is melted in places.
So I work with what I am given under the truck on the side of the road. I fire up the butane and melt what strap I can. I take the cutter apart and use the cutter blade to remove what strap I can.
Bottom line. I am home, perhaps a little later because of the accident, but i am home. Problem fixed.
Truck rental place will have to change the bearing. But, mission complete with virtually little down time.
How's that?

I have literally used actual baling wire to secure a loose exhaust system underneath a delivery truck my former employer used to make me drive. Had to jerryrig the rollup door in the back more times than I care to think about. Duct tape, wire, and small hand tools became everyday items. Numerous similar makeshift fixes like that, until fate smiled on me and the GM of the company saw me making field-expedient repairs just outside his office one day. When I told him this was SOP in my department and I'd been so far able to make repairs without injury to myself, a light seemed to go on in his head and a new vehicle found its way to my loading dock in a few days' time.
