Loma Linda Passes No Tolerance Smoking Ban

A story by Darrell R. Santschi in The Press-Enterprise online (www.pe.com) reported that the City Council of Loma Linda, California has passed a smoking ban so restrictive that offenders could find themselves receiving a wallet whopping citation.

After July 24, anyone caught smoking in parks, restaurants, theaters, at bus stops, City Hall or in most of the city's motel and apartment units faces a fine of up to $100.

The approval came in a 4-1 vote, with Mayor Robert Christman casting the lone dissenting vote.

"I personally think this is way too much government," he said, insisting that "common courtesy works" and that he believes the ordinance would be unenforceable.

I really wish 2/3 of my family didn't live there - I hate the state with a passion.

Wow, this sucks... California makes Illinois appear to be normal... (not)

We know one thing/person in Illinois who is not even close to being normal (okay, maybe two).

The one thing that makes me just crazy about all anti-smoking legislation is that states and communities are free to limit the use of a legal product while at the same time free to tax the living daylights out of those who choose to sell or use it. To use a gambler's parlance, the system is rigged to always favor the house.

It's my standard argument, but aren't there more pressing issues that Loma Linda should be focusing on than smoking? Do kids have all the books they need? How are the roads? I'd love to see someone get ticketed - or fined - when a child graduation from high school can't read above a sixth grade level. Where's the passionate argument about the "common good" on that and other issues?

Anyone ever read Georg Orwell's "1984"? It has begun and California is leading the way.

The things in 1984 have existed for longer than the book has been in existence, i.e., since at least the 1930s, all over the world but especially in the most highly-developed countries. The reality when it comes to terrorism is that governments by and large exist to terrorize the citizenry, to keep us in fear, and our local and federal governments are a good example of this.

I agree that it has existed for much longer than most of us realize. I just don't think it been as "in your face" as it is now. Cameras on every corner, gov't enacting laws against personal freedoms, talk of monitoring/policing the internet [not that they're not already doing that... was that a knock at the door?...], asking neighbors to report on neighbors [smoking bans], etc... It's like they're not even trying to hide it anymore.

"asking neighbors to report on neighbors"

ummm - you mean just like "National Socialism", better known as "Nazi".

before you laugh it off. If you remove the word "Jewish" and put in the word "smoker" you may find the early signs of treatment eerily similiar. I'm not making light of the massacres of those people, nor do I think we'll come to the point of smokers actually being treated the same overall but, think about how neighbors bore the same "responsibility" to let the "authorities" know of the actions of their neighbors................

When I hear Loma Linda, I think of the brand of the same name, which makes unappetizing meat-substitute vegetarian food which even I, who love quite a bit of vegetarian food, never eat.

It's good to hear the mayor of Loma Linda speaking up in dissent. One would hope that he would use the resources of his office to make sure that the law is not enforced, to the extent he can get away with that.
